ARTIST Biography
Mike Scott was born on May 14, 1962 in Johnson City, Tennessee and celebrated 50 years in music this December 2022, which impressively includes over 400 performances at the Grand Ole Opry since moving to Nashville in 1983. This national & internationally known banjo/guitar player has earned a fine reputation as a talented singer, songwriter, producer and TV host, as well as sideman from some of music’s greatest performers. His Mom & Dad bought him his first banjo for Christmas 1972 at the age of 10. He first took the stage just after three months when he started playing banjo, and was in his first band…”The Rocky Mountain Boys” just 8 months later performing the five-state area around East Tennessee. Being from the small town of Watauga, TN, nestled in the mountains of East Tennessee, his journey continues.
After being offered jobs with Grand Ole Opry Stars “Bill Monroe & The Bluegrass Boys” and “Jim & Jesse and The Virginia Boys” at age 15…Mike continued to perform regionally until he graduated high school in 1980 with area local bands in East Tennessee…The Rocky Mountain Boys (1972-1973) band members including: James McCammey, Jimmy Farmer, Charlotte Willis, & Glen Bowman …The Tennessee Bluegrass Four (1974-1977) band Members including: Jeff lethcoe, Jerry lethcoe, & Michael Williams…“The Cumberland Mountain Boys” (1978-1979) band members including Bill Singleton, James McCammey, & Cecil Ellinburg…At age 18, he joined “Carl Story and The Rambling Mountaineers” (The Father of Bluegrass Gospel) for two years performing 175-200 show dates per year. Band members including: Carl Story, George Hazelwood, Mitchell Moser, Billy Baker, Jerry Munday, & Clarence “Tater” Tate. He then joined “Jim & Jesse & The Virginia Boys” at The Grand Ole Opry February 4, 1983 for nearly four years performing 240-260 show dates per year…US, Canada, Europe, & South Africa. Band members including: Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Keith McReynolds, Allen Shelton, Steve Thomas, Vasser Clements, Jim Brock, & Jimmy Buchanan. “Mike Scott/Artist” He had an acoustic Bluegrass & Country record deal with Randy Tallmadge (RCA) and Mike Curb (Curb Records) in 1990 & 1991 including Nashville’s top studio musicians (Carl Jackson, Stuart Duncan, Steve Turner, Gary Smith, Bruce Bouton, Emory Gordy Jr., & Brent Mason) and featuring vocals by Emmy Lou Harris and producer Carl Jackson. Mike later performed from 1998- 2006 with “Big Band” sensations “Danny Davis & The Nashville Brass” and “Boots Randolph” on many select National road dates as wells as performing at their Nashville home base theater…” The Stardust Theater” on Music Valley Drive, Nashville, TN entertaining six nights per week. Mike still enjoys occasional road dates and Grand Ole Opry performances with Jesse McReynolds and The Virginia Boys…Jesse carrying on the legacy since the passing of Jim McReynolds in 12/31/02 from 1986,
Mike has performed with “Ronnie Reno & The Reno Tradition” and has been a featured Artist/Musician and Band Member in Ronnie’s band from October 2001 until October 2019 as Ronnie retired from music and touring. making Mike part of the band touring & recording for 18 years touring Nationally & Internationally. Band Members including: Ronnie Reno, Heath VanWinkle, Danny Roberts, Jackie Miller, Steve Day, Brian Blaylock, & John Maberry. You can see Mike on Ronnie’s TV show…”Reno’s Old Time Music” on RFD TV featured weekly in the host band and featured regularly on the “Super Pickers” segment of the show. The show has 60 plus million Viewers.
He leads “Mike Scott & The Nashville Band” currently since 1986 touring Nationally & Internationally, performing festivals, along with cooperate & private events, as well as church and family events. Band members including: Scott Houston, Eddie Miller, Richard Bennett, Terry Eldridge, Scott Risner, Mike Davis, Darin Lyons, Michael Vidito, Carl Jackson, Steve Day, Kim Garner, Valery Deaton Story, Sonja Isaacs, Craig Duncan, Billy Smith, Marilyn Smith, Jackie Miller, Cyndi Miller. Heath VanWinkle, Scott Napier, Aubrey Haynie, Bob Minner, Luke Shamblin, Ferrell Stowe, Josh Ulbrick, Keith Williams, Mynabelle Williams, & Bill Baldock.
Mike also teaches banjo professionally at select National & International Music Workshops and collages, etc. He & his wife Brenda Marshall Scott (The Marshall family) own, operate, and manage “The Grand Inheritance/circa 1790” …a wedding & events facility/property in Gallatin, TN they purchased Sept 2001.
Mike also served as host for Rural Rhythm Records TV Show “Behind the Dream” on Blue Highways TV.
